In my classroom I emphasize and encourage the need to search outside the established Western/European canon, and to represent “othered” artists. I teach with an emphasis on contemporary critical thought. I engage students in exploring art history and current issues and events in tandem. I guide students in developing their critical thinking skills so as to investigate sociopolitical issues through a post-modernized imagination, cultivating an environment where all students feel safe and encouraged to share their views in our discussions. I believe that an education in the arts is fertile ground for emboldening students to exercise critical thinking skills which can be applied to all disciplines in the arts and beyond.
Societies and the environment are in constant flux. Education must continue to change with the shifts of our generations. Today we face an uncertain virus that keeps us locked in our shelters, and unable to gather in traditional classrooms and labs. Educators must create innovative ways of teaching art online when materials become virtual and physically intangible. I accept and will overcome this challenge. I have had experience in transitioning studio classes and lecture series to online formats with students achieving success in their projects and assignments.
Since the COVID-19 virus I have been redesigning lesson plans for online instruction for ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, painting, drawing, performance art, and video, as well as researching a variety of engaging approaches for presenting art history lectures online. I am excited for the day when we all can return to the classrooms and labs, but until then we must keep education in progress, not just for the survival of the arts, but for the survival of humanity.
